For the seventh round of the series we again raced at Amlwch. This course was a favourite with some of the riders last time we visited, and this time was no exception. Course designers Richard Jones and Marc Bowman, both members of Holyhead CC, gave the visiting riders something different from last time and it proved a hit.
With dry conditions the course proved challenging but fast, with the majority of it rideable. The main obstacle facing riders were the number of mechanicals. Previous winner Mathew Prichard was one of the first puncture victims and he spent the rest of the race trying to get back on terms with eventual race winner Chris Purt (Energy Cycles). Another casualty was round five winner Pete Windsor (Llyn CC), who was to suffer a double puncture very early on and had to abandon.
In the junior race, brothers Owain and Rhys James (Energy Cycles) showed there growing prowess in racing with the seniors, and held there own over the longer distance. Both riders have shown good form over the series and are no doubt going to be a prominent force come next year.
The veterans race was won by Mark Baker (Deeside), who now holds a lead in the overall rankings. A mention must go to Ian Evans (Hallesowen CC), who until three laps to go was leading the veterans race until he to suffered an untimely puncture.
Plas Ffrancon will play host to our final round on the 28th of Feb. The scene is set for some exciting racing as riders challenge for overall success in the series.
